Took H on his first backpack to the Gila Wilderness. There’s a trail that follows the Middle fork of the Gila River and we took it as far as a place called Little Bear canyon, about 6 1/2 miles in. Cindy provided much needed comic relief by losing the soles of both of her old Vasque sundowners. I guess all the stream crossings were just too much. Henry hung in there, had a great time making up hiking songs and having fun. On both Saturday and Sunday we ran into a guy on horseback running his coon hounds. The second time we saw them, all the dogs surrounded Henry, believing they had tree’d something. The lead dog started balling and howling and generally raising a racket until the other dogs arrived to gave henry a tongue bath. We also saw some pack burros on the trail and quail i think. Some pretty cool lizards, too, perhaps of the uta stansburiana variety.
Had a big dinner in Silver City and H slept pretty good Sunday night. Check out the gallery for some more picks of Hank vs. Wild. And if you can spare it, please contribute cash, check or some old shoestrings for Cindy’s next pair of boots.
